The effect of the dynamical state of clusters on gas expulsion and infant mortality

چکیده

The star formation efficiency (SFE) of a star cluster is thought to be the critical factor in determining if the cluster can survive for a significant (> 50 Myr) time. There is an often quoted critical SFE of ∼ 30 per cent for a cluster to survive gas expulsion. I reiterate that the SFE is not the critical factor, rather it is the dynamical state of the stars (as measured by their virial ratio) immediately before gas expulsion that is the critical factor. If the stars in a star cluster are born in a (even slightly) cold dynamical state then the survivability of a cluster can be greatly increased.

Infant mortality in the hierarchical merging scenario: dependence on gas expulsion time-scales

We examine the effects of gas expulsion on initially substructured and out-of-equilibrium star clusters. We perform N-body simulations of the evolution of star clusters in a static background potential before adjusting that potential to model gas expulsion. We investigate the impact of varying the rate at which the gas is removed, and the instant at which gas removal begins. Reducing the rate a...

Gas expulsion and the destruction of massive young clusters

We examine the luminosity and dynamical mass estimates for young massive stellar clusters. For many young (< 50 Myr) clusters, the luminosity and dynamical mass estimates differ by a significant amount. We explain this as being due to many young clusters being out of virial equilibrium (which is assumed in dynamical mass estimates) because the clusters are undergoing violent relaxation after ex...

Surviving infant mortality in the hierarchical merging scenario

We examine the effects of gas expulsion on initially substructured and out-of-equilibrium star clusters. We perform N-body simulations of the evolution of star clusters in a static background potential before removing that potential to model gas expulsion. We find that the initial star formation efficiency is not a good measure of the survivability of star clusters. This is because the stellar ...

Evidence for the Strong Effect of Gas Removal on the Internal Dynamics of Young Stellar Clusters

We present detailed luminosity profiles of the young massive clusters M82-F, NGC 1569-A, and NGC 1705-1 which show significant departures from equilibrium (King and EFF) profiles. We compare these profiles with those from N -body simulations of clusters which have undergone the rapid removal of a significant fraction of their mass due to gas expulsion. We show that the observations and simulati...

Variations of Infant and Under-five Child Mortality Rates around the World, the Role of Human Development Index (HDI)

Background: The Human Development Index (HDI) is a composite statistic of life expectancy, education, and income per capita indicators, which apart from measuring the socio-economic development of countries can predict health outcomes. The current study aimed at determination of the effects of HDI individual components on infant and child mortality. Materials and Methods: At a cross- sectional ...
